Pottawattamie County Rural Recycling Center

  • Facebook

In 2018, with the support of Iowa West Foundation and the guidance of the Recycling Taskforce the Pottawattamie County Rural Recycling Center was built in Oakland, Iowa. The overarching objective of this facility is to encourage participation in recycling and waste minimizing efforts to conserve energy, recover resources, protect the environment, and ensure our County is thriving for future generations.

The Rural Recycling Center allows the County to expand the recycling programs offered and to lessen the amount of waste that is transported to landfills. Per the Northwest Iowa Area Solid Waste Agency and Recycling, about 80% of what Americans throw away is recyclable, yet the average recycling rate is only 28%. On average, a person produces 4.4 pounds of daily solid waste, totaling one ton of trash per person annually.
